Description
Some VB kids that grew up listening to all kinds of music, never really fit into any scene so they made their own. Call them daydreamers, outcasts, nerds . . they’re cool with it. The more you try to label them, the more they surprise you with their versatility. J.Pharaoh and the Manhattan Project have that ability to masterfully illustrate cautionary tales lyrically but also don’t take themselves too seriously with party anthems and feel good tracks that force you to move. Just bob your head and mind your business :)
Biography
Justin “J.Pharaoh ” Hernandez, the front man
“Call me Mr. Best of the Beach. Start with the poem then was blessed with the speech. Then I started flowin’ and was blessed with the beat” [from the song Won Ton Soup].
J. Pharaoh independently released an album years ago with the help of Cee Rolla and Trevor Hale of Manifest Productions, went to NYC to study sound engineering, came back to the beach, …drove big rig trucks and continued writing for almost 10 years before recording The Silver Lining LP. If you ask any other local artist around Hampton Roads what they think about J. Pharaoh, they’ll all say pretty much the same thing. The dude is just cool. You’ll always see him at other artists shows, supporting the scene. Spoken word poet performing at various pen mics throughout the area. Then after linking up with a group of friends who are now known as the Manifest Productions team; He decided to put his lyrical prowess to the mic & begin recording. Since then he has grown into, not only a great MC, but also a very talented upcoming producer & knowledgeable sound engineer. His music is heartfelt, dynamic & sonically exquisite!Marco Mercado, the hype man
“They say Marco is soooo ghetto! If he were white, he’d be trailer park trash!” [from his spoken word album Bits & Pieces]
Marco could always command the attention of a room. Whether it’s from his elaborate costume changes at shows or the sole sound of his voice spitting rapid fire words so slick that you have to watch it back in video to really let it sink in. He started out as emcee but transitioned into spoken word where his words and message could really take affect. In his days at ODU, he organized a showcase called Marco and Friends, where he could introduce the public to all the artists he knows and supports. Post graduation, he took the same concept to different venues around the 757 eventually finding a home at 45 Degrees Martini Lounge and calling the show Last Tuesdays [they are held on the last Tuesday of every month]. Marco is currently an 8th grade Civics teacher for VB public schools.Rina Parrilla Garcia, the singer/guitar chick
“I am not the idol and I am not your rival. I don’t spit for nobody my flow is not entitled” [from the song Out of Sight, off The Siliver Lining LP]
Rina comes from an extremely musical family so with the help of the guitar tabs downloaded from the internet, an arsenal of popular songs she wanted to learn, and being a loner during summer vacation 1997 she and her sister Ciesther [of Astropop3] taught themselves guitar. Since then, she’s been in various music projects spanning across several genres in order to satisfy her ADD. Through a Marco and Friends show, she met Justin who suggested a collaboration. Rina has been in The Manhattan Project for 2 years, as well as playing in side projects Astronaut Mike Dexter and 2 Up High, bartending, freelancing as a makeup artist and hairstylist for DCPG, full time wife to Zern [drummer of The Fastermores and The Alternative], and unconventional but devoted mother to her son Antonio.Jay “J-Pro” Portugal, the piano man

The dancers and choreographers worked 17+ restless hours straight throughout the night into the next morning in order to ensure some would be able to travel back home to keep their jobs. Our dancers are passionate, dedicated, and ruthless. As cliché as it may sound…

Hard work and dedication pays off.

Many thanks go to the KODACHROME Dancers + Media Team that sacrificed their time and energy to make sure KODACHROME was well represented for this amazing opportunity to expose dance.
